Clothing Yourself with Compassion Prayer

Touch, Seeing, Hearing

Colossians 3:12-14 teaches “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

Using those verses create a creative prayer moment using several pieces of clothing.  This can be done by giving everyone the same pile of clothes to put on at the instructed time; or as prayer stations with three to five people at a time at each station; or in a large group with the leader leading the prayer and physically putting on the clothes while the participants use their imagination.

After each piece of clothing there is a written prayer.  Feel free to add a personal touch to each of these prayers.

Gloves = symbolizes the touch of compassion

Prayer:  May our hands be used to touch others as if we were Jesus.  May our hands be used for good.  May our hands not be used to hurt someone else.  May our hands not be used in gestures that are despairing and anti-authority.  May whomever my hands touch know they are loved first and most by Jesus.

Lipstick/Chapstick = symbolizes words of kindness

Prayer:  May we speak words of kindness.  May people know they have been kissed by their Creator just from being in our presence.  May we see the whole story as You see it and respond in kindness.  May we speak your words so they become like flesh to others.

Worn Shoes = symbolizes humility

Prayer:  May we walk humbly.  May we walk into a situation thinking not what happens to me but what can happen for God’s glory.  May we walk in dirty places spreading the gospel of good news.  May we leave footprints that others will say “God was here.”

Soft Sweater = symbolizes gentleness

Prayer:  So few truly experience gentleness whether it is a kind word or a soft touch or a slice of strawberry pie.  May our actions be gentle.  May our touch be gentle.  May the hardness of the lives of others be softened by Your presence in my life.

Long Scarf = symbolizes God’s patience

Prayer:  Dear God, your patience is long.  May your patience towards me wrap around me so I can wrap it around others.  When others fail, may I be reminded of your long patience with me.

Beautiful Rock Jewelry = symbolizes the precious nature of God’s forgiveness

Prayer:  Thank you for your gift of forgiveness.  It is beautiful as it gives me a second chance.  Like the rock that was not used to stone the adulterous woman, you do not throw rocks at me but ask that I go and sin no more.  May I always remember that command especially as I live with compassion towards those who do not understand forgiveness.  May they see the beautiful rock that I am due to your forgiveness and see that forgiveness is possible for them.

Hat = symbolizes that on top of everything there is love

Prayer:  And lastly, there is love.  As scriptures say, And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.  May I live a life of love first.  May I be known as one who loves first.  And may I live up to your word which says “whoever puts his trust in me can do the things I am doing. He will do even greater things than these” because of love.  I will be loyal to you.

Amen.
